The Recreation league was formed on the principles of education, fun, and experience. This continues to be the foundation of the CASL soccer program. Recreation teams welcome participants with all levels of soccer experience, beginning with kindergarten learners to skilled high-school students who want to have fun playing the game. CASL Recreation teams are co-ed for U-6 (actually 6 and under), U-8, and U-10. The U-12 and above are gender specific. The U-6 entry level soccer program is focusing on skill development and play time. This is stressed in the reduction of "competitive game" time and an increase in small-sided (3v3 and 4v4) playing time. This increases the kid's involvement in the game, their actual "touches" on the soccer ball, and thereby develops their critical skills levels. These programs, called "micro-soccer" are being adopted nationally and reaching into the U-8 age groups as evidence of their success mounts. All coaches are volunteers, usually parents with their own children on their team (or two). The league provides basic coaching clinics and literature. The emphasis is on teaching the skills, team work, strategy, and sportsmanship. CASL has subscribed to the Canandaigua City School District's Character in Education Partnership in maintaining a high profile of conduct and educational emphasis. Scores of individual competitions are not kept, recorded, or published in order to reduce the focus on winning. CASL focuses on success of the individual's development.
